Here it comes...

Parent: Go to your room.

4-year old: No.

Parent: I'm sorry. What did you just say to me??!

4-year old: No. I'm not going.

And so it has begun...

Yeah. It sucks - there's no way around that.

We manage to get around a lot of it by offering choices.

"You can go to your room by yourself, or I can carry you. Which would you prefer?"

I'm thinking, though, that this is going to be less of an option when the girls reach un-liftable ages.

The response to this particular affront to our parental sovereignty was exactly what you described. She chose not to go quietly.

Later, dinners were cut unceremoniously short after they both were warned about inappropriate mealtime behavior. Some lessons are harder to learn than others.

But they will all be learned.
